Breast Cancer Awareness Month Kickoff

It’s that time of year again! The month of October signals the fall season but is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is always such a busy month for me, but it is also my favorite as a breast surgeon. Not only is my office crazy, but I have the opportunity to speak and educate women about breast cancer and general breast health. I plan on doing that all month on this blog as well.

We are going to dive into topics such as when to start breast screening, breast cancer diagnosis and management, reconstruction options for the breast cancer patient, and life after breast cancer treatment.

To start, here are some tips to be mindful of as we enter Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

  1. Annual mammograms should begin at the age of 40 for average risk women.

  2. Maintain a healthy weight, stay active, and minimize alcohol intake to decrease your risk for developing breast cancer.

  3. While breast self-examinations are no longer recommended, be mindful of how your breasts feel and look so that you can easily identify abnormalities if they pop up.

  4. If you feel something, say something. New masses or skin changes warrant immediate evaluation and breast imaging.

  5. Check on your friends and family! Make sure they are also getting their annual check-ups and appropriate screening.

I am so excited about relaying valuable breast health information to you as we also honor those who have been affected by breast cancer. Be on the lookout for new posts throughout the month. If you have specific questions, please reach out!

With Love,
